As President, Richard Nixon recognized that the space program excited Americans’ capacity for wonder. All six lunar touchdowns, beginning with Apollo 11 in 1969 and culminating with Apollo 17 in 1972, occurred during Nixon's presidency making him the only president to witness a Moon landing during their time in the White House. This bow tie features the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) emblem.

This bow tie design coincided with the Nixon Library's exhibition Apollo 11: One Giant Leap for Mankind, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing. The exhibition looked back at the Space Race of the 1950s and 1960s, highlighting the scientific and technological advancements that were developed to ensure the success of the mission.
